Back in December of 2017 I came upon a monthly writing challenge. The challenge is to write 400 words per day for 5/7 days of the week. If you successfully complete this challenge, you will have written 8,000 words at the end of the month! I like this challenge because it can include ANY kind of writing and quite honestly, the majority of my day is actually spent writing.
I then decided to up the ante and see if I could write about pediatric cancer in some way, shape or form for 365 days. As I write this, I don’t know exactly what this will look like for the next 364 days, but the reason I wanted to do this is two-fold.
- When your child is diagnosed with cancer, it is on your mind 365 days a year. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, but that only has 30 days and it’s just not enough for me.
- I have been thinking a lot about what my role as an educator is and I think it’s my responsibility to be part of the good information that is out there and let’s “pull the curtains” back a bit on the day to day life of a pediatric oncologist, academic medicine, a woman in science, and a working mom (some of my top passions in life).
I want to invite you into this world and show you the highs, the lows, and everything in between including all the good people that fight the good fight. My dad always told me that if I found a job I truly loved, it would never be work and I really think I found it. I hope you find some of it educational, entertaining, heartwarming, and hopeful. Not all of my posts may be blog-world worthy so come on over to https://www.facebook.com/BeyondTheCoat/ for day to day musings and other fun stuff.
I hope you all stay tuned throughout the year, feel free to ask any questions or suggest topics, and have a happy and blessed New Year.
